Roofing in Poplar
Poplar's housing is mostly post-war, and that shapes the work we do here. The Lansbury Estate — built as the live architecture exhibition for the 1951 Festival of Britain — and the low-rise council blocks and maisonettes around it were largely topped with flat roofs in built-up felt. Felt was the standard of its day, but its day is long gone: most of these roofs have been patched and re-patched over the decades, and plenty are now simply at the end of their life.
That age shows up in predictable ways. Felt blisters, splits at the laps and cracks where it turns up at the edges. Internal and parapet outlets and hoppers block with leaves and silt, so rainwater backs up and finds the weak spots. Walkway and balcony roofs take foot traffic they were never really built for. And rooms under flat roofs — bedrooms especially — suffer condensation where there's little or no insulation above the ceiling. There are also pockets of surviving Victorian terraces in Poplar, with the slipped slates, tired flashings and crumbly ridge mortar that come with roofs of that age.
